"Love wasn't having a warm feeling but it was a decision you make, and love is not something we wait to have happen to us, but something we do" (Pastor Ostrum 39).
This quote is important to the book because it shows how love really is and how it is formed. Just today in church my Pastor talked about love and how no matter who or what the person is you should love them the way you wish to be loved. A specific quote my pastor spoke states: "Love others as you love yourself" (Lusko). Too often humanity is caught up loving themselves and nurturing themselves rather than showing compassion for those around them. This seems to be the case for Gretchen. Nobody wants to understand her and so she has no love in her life. Lack of love in a person's life can be detrimental to their well-being. Suicide, depression, self-harm, murder, and abuse are just a few examples of the terrible instances that can occur in a loveless person's life. Cal bringing love into Gretchen's life will help build her confidence and possibly create endless opportunities of friendship.
