A. In these first 21 chapters I learned that the human race is a very insulting species. Whether it is children picking on other kids because they wear glasses or adults mocking other adults because they are not as wealthy. People in this book are very barbarous to Gretchen.
B. What I rediscovered is what it is like for people to be made fun of for no apparent reason. Again, people continuously judge Gretchen when they have no idea what her life is like. Cal is slowly starting to become more understanding.
C. I was most surprised when Cal fumbled the football. This is not anything too important unless you relate it to a bigger picture. Him dropping the football could symbolize how close he becomes to accomplishing something good just to have it crumble right at the tip of his fingers.
D. I wonder... Will Cal and Gretchen become something more than just two people that understand each other? Cal is really showing compassion to Gretchen and usually that leads to more than being friends.
E. A disturbing situation is when Cal blamed Gretchen for him having 7th period. It was completely his fault for starting the conversation. It is not necessary to talk, so why do it when you are not allowed?
F. I am really confused on why Cal is so intent on Lara. It is like a typical Hollywood movie. The boy feels like he deserves the preppy girl, but he is secretly in love with the outcast. I doubt he actually has feelings for Lara, he probably is just using that as a front so people do not judge his love for Gretchen.
